The Speaker: innocent until proven guilty – by Edward Leigh MP

portrait-edwardleigh1The arrest of Damian Green was appalling, and questions obviously need to be asked. But before we judge the Speaker we need to listen to his side of the story. Before we rush to attack him we must remember that little is to be gained by a return to the bad old days of solving a problem by cutting off the Speaker’s head. As strong a defence of the freedom of Parliament as privilege is the sanctity of the office of Speaker. Its inviolability between elections is just as important.
