We should welcome David Miliband’s conversion – by Edward Leigh MP

It has been revealed that since last September the Foreign Secretary David Miliband has been sending his first child to a faith school, despite the fact that he lives closer to a secular school.

Mr Miliband has spoken of being an atheist and, as a high-ranking member of a government that has done so much to reduce the ability of faith schools to make decisions based on their faith, his decision, on the face of it at least, is somewhat surprising.

However, when one acknowledges that children at faith schools consistently out-perform their contemporise at secular schools the reasoning behind his decision becomes clearer. Like any parent he clearly wants the best for his child.

We should welcome Mr Miliband’s active acceptance that faith schools are a force for good within the education system and hope that the government starts to recognise this through political action.
